Forgot Temazo Tuesday again. My B. Normally I wouldn't worry about it, just chalk it up to being busy...but this week I have a really great song, so I'm going to post it anyway. Pretend it's Tuesday.
But first, good news! The fleas are gone!!! Well, they seem to be...I don't want to jinx it. However, I haven't seen a trace of one in a week, ever since I used the best product ever, Silpatox. After mopping the floor three times (once with lavender-scented soap, once with poison-scented poison, and once with anti-flea pesticide) and washing all of my sheets, rugs, mats, and clothes about 18 times, I was still seeing fleas. (A few notes: 1. Mopping the floor three times creates monster blisters and an aching back...and a new-found respect for all people in the cleaning industry...props 2. Seeing a flea land on your sock after mopping the floor with poison is probably the worst feeling in the world...hopes = dashed cruelly.)
So after a month of living with the little bastards, I did what I should have done at the beginning and went to the vet's office up the block (which is probably where the cat picked them up in the first place) and asked if they had anything to kill fleas that persisted even after the original host was gone. The girl took a few steps back from me (it's not like the fleas were ON me at that very moment, sheesh), handed me a can of something and said press this button and leave the house for 2 hours. Which I did.
When I came back from a lovely, mosquito-filled stint in the park (for some reason, bugs seek me out) and entered my apartment, I was holding my breath partly because of the massive cloud of poison that filled the place and partly because I was waiting to see a cursed flea. After airing the house, I still hadn't seen one, and my hopes began to climb, slowly and cautiously.
It's now a week later, and I still have not seen a flea. However, I am still partially holding my breath...it's so hard to believe that they're just all gone. I pounce on every little speck of black that I see on my socks, my sheets, my feet, the floor, the futon, heart in my throat. But so far, it's always lint...or dirt...or food--I've sworn off mopping, can you tell? But no fleas! I venture a tentative "Yay?"
Anywho, back to the matter at hand. Today's temazo is an amazing song by the band Electric Six, called "Danger! High Voltage!" The video leaves me speechless every time I watch it...it's that great. With flashing jock straps and a moose, how can you go wrong? Don't ask questions, just watch it and enjoy. And thank me when you're done.

Temazo Tuesday
I am fascinated. Absolutely fascinated. Have you seen the latest Lady Gaga video? IT'S INSANE! I mean, honestly...who came up with the idea for this video?! The costumes, the setting...it's all just so...WEIRD. I love watching Lady Gaga--there's just something so delightfully creepy about her that is entrancing. It's not necessarily good music, but at least watch the video. Her outfits are probably the best part of the whole thing...she wears sunglasses made out of lit cigarettes in one scene...really. Can't make this stuff up, people. Here it is, Telephone by Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce.

Temazo Tuesday
It's been a while since I posted a Temazo Tuesday...sometimes life just gets in the way of things, I suppose. But now its back, so no worries!
On another note, I can't believe how fast summer turned into fall here. It's March 16 (aka St Paddy's Day Eve) which is the equivalent to September 16 in the States, given the upside-down and backwardness of the southern hemisphere seasons. Definitely fall. Well, not technically. But whatever. Semantics. I feel like something in the air has changed, and its gone from oppressively hot and muggy/buggy to crisp and kind of windy. I'm sure there will still be warm days, but we've turned a corner for sure. I've brought out the cold-weather standbys: moccasin slippers, incredibly hole-y Delaware sweatpants and hoody, extra comforter on the bed, and giant socks.
Hot tea is now the breakfast of choice in the mornings, as opposed to iced coffee. I hate to say it, but I've definitely picked up the Argentine habit of not eating breakfast. Most people here either have coffee or mate in the morning with a few cookies (galletitas) or crackers, and that's it. None of that pancake/eggs/hashbrowns/sausage/waffles/cereal/toast/poptart nonsense! Denny's would not do well here in A-tina.
Anyway, today's temazo has nothing to do with the weather. Or breakfast. I just ramble sometimes. Today's temazo is a song by Celso Piña, a Mexican singer and and accordionist. According to Wikipedia, the source of all knowledge, he taught himself how to play the accordion and used to give "serenatas en el barrio a todas las chicas de la cuadra." Translation: he used to give serenades in the hood to all the girls on the block (Jenny on the Block?). Interesting.
His music is a mix of cumbia, Caribbean, sonidero, and a whole bunch of other stuff, and I like it. I've been listening to this one since I discovered it on my iTunes (I have no idea where half the music on that thing comes from...most of the time it's just a big grab-bag of crap, but sometimes I find some real gems). My cat also liked this song--I used to hold him like a baby and bounce him up and down while singing it. It's called El Tren (Mr. Cumbia Man) and features a fascinating rapper (?) called Blanquito Man. The video is quite amusing--Blanquito Man has some sick moves--so enjoy!

Temazo Tuesday
Ay, I almost forgot again! I've been busy doing some work online and dealing with two cats in the apartment (I'm watching one for my friend), and almost forgot to post a temazo, horror of horrors. Anyway, today's temazo is going to be a song by an Argentine band called Los Autenticos Decadentes, English translation = the Decadant Authentic Ones. The band formed in the late 80's and plays a mix of ska and various other types of music. There are about 10 or 12 people in the band, and many of their songs are absolute classics here in Argentina. The topics of their temas are often amusing or silly, including the one I'm posting today.
The title is "Los Piratas," a term used to refer to men who go out at night and troll for loose women (gatos) in cabarets and strip joints. It's kind of a party anthem, and is also pretty hysterical if you watch the video...think Saturday Night Fever meets Vegas. But Latin. And 80's. Ridiculous.
The other day a good Argentine friend of mine threatened to abuse me physically if I didn't stop singing this song, so I get the impression that not everyone enjoys Los Autenticos Decadentes. But I do, so HA. "Despues del cabaret, nos vamos para el sauna!!!" Ahi va.

Temazo Tuesday
6 months and 1 day. That's how long I've been here in Buenos Aires. Half a year since I packed up all my crap (read: clothes) and shipped myself down to the southern hemisphere. Half a year since I last saw my family and friends. Half a year since I've driven a car, eaten Chik-fil-A, watched TV. It's been half a freaking year since I left American soil, but sometimes I feel like I just got here. So much has happened that it kind of seems like a blur.
I've lived in two apartments with four different people, some of whom I will be friends with for life. I've held two jobs, one bad and one mediocre (the good one is coming soon, fingers crossed!). I've been to different cities, concerts, parks, shows, bars, clubs, and countless restaurants. I went to Octoberfest. My best friend Stephanie came and visited me. I got a cat. I've done things I never thought I would and I can only look forward to more great things (Patagonia and beach, here I come!)
On the other hand, sometimes I feel like I've been here forever. I have a normal life here now--I have a support system of good friends, activities, routines. I pay rent and I pay bills. I do laundry, I go shopping, I clean the apartment. I take the cat to the vet and threaten to throw him off the balcony if he doesn't stop whining. I go out for dinner with friends, drink beers, hang out at the park. I bitch about the heat and the government and the men. Sometimes it almost seems too mundane, but then I remember that I'm in Buenos Aires and not many other people can say that they moved to the city they love and started a new life from scratch. (Go me!)
Who knows what will happen in the future? I am in love with Argentina, and until that changes, I'm not going anywhere (unless I get deported, which is not a complete impossibility). I have no incentive to leave, and plenty of reasons to stay: the city, the language, the food, the nightlife, the culture, the people. The people alone are reason enough.
So in honor of my love for Argentina and also because I've been playing this song almost non-stop since I watched High Fidelity with John Cusack, today's temazo is going to be "I Believe (When I Fall in Love)" by Stevie Wonder. Beautiful song for a beautiful country...it almost makes me cry. Or at least it would if I wasn't completely dehydrated from sweating day and night. YUM. Take it away, Stevie!

Temazo Tuesday
Oops! Forgot again. My bad. Being unemployed is so tough, I'm just so busy running around and doing important things. Like getting up at 7 to go to migraciones, forgetting my passport, having to come all the way home to get it, and then trekking back to Retiro. In the heat of the morning. Yeah.
Anyway, temazo. Today's temazo is by an Argentine band called Babasonicos and is called "Microdancing." It's catchy, and Babasonicos are/were huge here in Argie-land so one of their songs is always appropriate. The video features some interesting dance moves in an appliance store. I know. I don't get it either. It's fun though. And now I am going to sweat some more and die slowly in the late evening heat. Hasta luego.

Temazo Tuesday
I loooove Third Eye Blind. Yes, that old band from the 90's. They are AWESOME! I've been listening to them a lot recently, and 5 of their songs are in my Top 50 Most Played on iTunes so it was just a matter of time before they made it onto Tuesday Temazo. Some of their songs are pretty well-known, but there are so many more that never got any radio airtime and that are sooooo good! I'll put two up today, one that's more popular and another one that's less so, but both are great. Awesome chill-out music and interesting lyrics, I highly recommend 3EB. Enjoy!

Tuesday Temazo: Speaking of hot...
Oh Jim Morrison. The hair. The voice. The talent. Can you say SEXY? I can. The Doors are great, of course, and Jim just adds to the sweet sweet music with his ridiculous sex appeal. Thus I present "Touch Me" by The Doors. Great sax at the end, excellent organ as always, hot lyrics, and Jim with maracas. It's love.

Temazo Tuesday
Today's Temazo was a tough choice. There are so many things going on right now that are potential Temazo themes: the holidays, a new year, my roommate Eli's birthday, a new kitten. I considered a Christmas song for a while, and then I thought about going the cat route and doing "Mean-Eyed Cat" by Johnny Cash (great song). We gonna party like it's ya birfday was a serious contender in honor of Eli's big day, but in the end I chose something classic, timeless, and epicly appropriate. I present:
"Summer in the City" by Lovin' Spoonful, one of my all-time favorite groups. "HOT TOWN summer in the city, back of my neck gettin dirty n gritty"...couldn't have said it better myself. It is sweltering here. As a bonus, check out the mutton-chops on the keyboardist...you don't see those every day!!

Temazo Tuesday
So it's Tuesday again! These weeks just seem to fly by, especially since they're such short weeks, what with all the holidays and such. Although, Tuesday might possibly be the worst day of the week. It's not Monday, which has the promise of a new week ahead in which anything might happen. Wednesday is "hump day" which apart from having a hilarious name means the end of the week is coming, and it's all basically downhill from there...Thursday and Friday are barely even real days. But Tuesday. Ugh. Tuesday has nothing going for it.
Today's Temazo is a strange song called "Nice Day for Ducks" by Lemon Jelly, and its pretty much an acid trip in video form (or so I've been told). I first heard this at my old (read: mind-numbingly tedious) job, where we played music all day as a way to escape from the dull reality of our labor. It's one of those songs that gets stuck in your head, and I figured since I already have it stuck in there, why not share it with the rest of you! Mwu-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Temazo Tuesday
OOPS! Soooo I completely forgot about Temazo Tuesday--I know you were all just breathless with anticipation to see what I would post this week! Well, what with the new job and the hour commute each way and the waiting at Retiro for three hours to pick up a package and the late-night soccer, it's been a little busy around here and I haven't been writing as much as I would like. I have a list of posts that I want to get up soon, so maybe over the holidays I'll be able to catch up.
As for now though, I have to go get ready for some fútbol action YAY...although I might have to walk the 22 blocks to the cancha because I don't have any moneda. I tried to get some yesterday and the kiosko guy gave me a pack of gum for 2 pesos instead of 3 because he didn't want to give me the moneda in change. It's ridiculous, this shortage of coins...the other day I chose to take an 8 peso cab rather than attempt to acquire 1.20 in moneda (of course, this was before I realized the taxi fare had gone up, from starting at 3.80 to starting at 4.60 and with a similar increase in the distance-traveled rate, que mierda).
So here is Tuesday's Temazo, posted on Wednesday, but whatever. It's a song that I looovvveee--the beat is amazing and it reminds me of some really fun nights out dancing. I present: "Tocarte Toa" by Calle 13.

Temazo Tuesday
Hola! I feel like so much has happened since I last posted, even though it was only a few days ago. First, I got a JOB! Farewell to lazy days around the house, hello 45 minute commute and real responsibility--I'm loving it! Second, I got a new roommate! My new friend Elizabeth recently moved into my apartment for a few months, most of which she will be spending at various beaches and luxury resorts instead of at the apartment, but hey, who wouldn't rather be at the beach?
On Sunday night I went out to dinner with Eli and two of her friends to a "puerta cerrada," a closed door restaurant here in the city. IT WAS AMAZING. I'm going to do a whole post about the experience as soon as I can put together 30 minutes of free time...this work thing takes up a lot of my day! I work from 1 to 8:30 (stupid West Coast clients), and have to commute out to Flores on the lovely 106, which unfortunately is often packed with tourists going shopping at the outlets on Córdoba, the lazy bums. Don't they have jobs?! I don't get back until about 9:15, and on Monday and Wednesday nights I have soccer at 11...I guess I'm just going to have to start getting up earlier...MUR.
Anyway, I'm not really inspired by any particular song at the moment, considering I am sitting on poof on my balcony watching an old man across the street scrape dried paint and chewed gum off his balcony rail...not really something that inspires poetry. So, I will post something completely lacking any kind of poetic grace: 'Bad Romance' by the one and only Lady Gaga. This video is...interesting. Kind of creepy, actually. But the song is catchy and it's fascinating to watch Lady Gaga do her stuff, especially if you keep in mind that lots of people think she is actually a man. Yeah.

Temazo Tuesday
It's that time again: Temazo Tuesday! This week I'm posting two songs that are seriously EVERYWHERE these days. They play them in clubs, they get blasted from car stereos, and the girl across the street dances to them on her balcony while simultaneously chain-smoking Marlboros, yammering away on her phone, and chugging Coca-Cola. It's a skill really.
And now to get philosophical. I don't know about you, but hearing certain songs can always bring on a wave of nostalgia. Our senses are the gateways to our memories, and just hearing part of a long-forgotten song, or catching the scent of a perfume our grandmothers used to wear, can instantly transport us to another time and place. For me, certain songs and albums are inextricably tied to specific people, places, and events, and whenever I hear these songs the memories come flooding back in waves. OAR's album 'Stories of a Stranger' will forever remind me of my freshman year of college; Kings of Leon is a good friend/ex-boyfriend; and my dad will always be "Hey Jude."
Point being, these two songs will forever remind me of my first months in Buenos Aires: sweaty from dancing in a crowded club, with the sweetly bitter taste of Fernet and Cola in my mouth, having the time of my life. That being said, for anyone else, they're just songs with good beats and catchy lyrics so enjoy!
The first is "Te Amo" by Makano, a club classic.
The second is "Llorarás por mi" by Chapa C and is a fantastic song to dance to and will make you want to jump on a table and shake it! Seriously. Just try it, it's liberating, I promise. Also, the video is hilarious...gotta love the manly weeping--I can almost feel his pain.

Temazo Tuesday
By the beard of Zeus! It's December! How time flies when you're having fun, eh? Although it doesn't really feel like December, what with all the sweating that's been going on lately. I see all the Christmas decorations in the store windows, and my poor little brain just can't reconcile what I'm seeing with this weather! I suppose when we grow up experiencing things a certain way, when tradition is broken we can't help but feel a little weird. But hey, that's why I'm here, to break out of the mold and experience the beauty of life in a new way. That, and the Argentine men (talk about beauty)!
Anyway, since it's the first of a new month, I've decided to launch some new projects, two to be exact. The first is more of a personal initiative, one that I like to call Operation Get Off Your Lard-Ass and Go Running. After four months of empanadas, pizza, milanesas, and other such delicacies (meat wrapped in meat, meat wrapped in bread, bread wrapped in bread, etc), I'm beginning to feel the effects. Nothing irreparable, but with summer coming up and bikini season right around the corner, I've decided to get back into running. In college I ran all the time, but since I've been here things just keep getting in the way. So, I'm getting off my ass and going running every day, starting today. I swear. After I finish this churro...
The second project is actually relevant to all of you, and it's exciting! Wait for it........Temazo Tuesday! It's gonna be huge. Last night I figured out how to put Youtube videos on my blog, and I came up with the idea to post a new song/video every Tuesday, just to brighten everyone's day, because who doesn't love a good song? Why Tuesday? Because Tuesday rhymes with temazo, and I just can't resist a chance inject a little alliteration into the world. For those who don't know, in Castellano songs are often referred to not as "canciones" like we were taught in school, but as "temas." A particularly good song, such as a classic Beatles hit or a popular anthem, is a "temazo."
Today's Temazo is "Me Gustas Tu" by Manu Chao, in honor of me going to see him in concert tonight, here in Buenos Aires, for 15 USD! YEAH! Be jealous. Anyway, here it is...Enjoy!
